Where Stone Turns to Gold: The Return of the Inca at the 2026 Inti Raymi

Inti Raymi is more than just a theatrical performance; it is the heartbeat of an empire that refuses to be forgotten. This ceremony is undoubtedly the most powerful and vibrant experience in the Andes. If you’re planning a trip to Cusco, this date will mark a turning point in your travel log.

On June 24 each year, Cusco ceases to be a modern city and transforms into the setting for the most impressive ceremony of the Inca Empire: the Inti Raymi, or Festival of the Sun. Coinciding with the winter solstice, this ancient celebration pays tribute to the sun god Inti and gives thanks for past harvests while asking for protection for the new agricultural cycle. Centuries later, Cusco still vibrates with this important ceremony, which stirs the emotions of its inhabitants and descendants and leaves an indelible memory in every visitor.

A Setting of Stone and Sky

Unlike other festivals, the celebration of Inti Raymi does not take place in a single location. It is a display of color and mysticism, a traveling spectacle that winds through the most important energy points of the capital of the Tahuantinsuyo.

  • The journey begins at the Qorikancha Temple, where the greeting to the sun takes place. This temple was once the most sacred in the empire. The Inca emerges amid Quechua chants, marking the beginning of a spiritual connection that can be felt in the air.
  • The Plaza de Armas (or Auqaypata) is flooded with color. The "Meeting of Two Worlds" and the coca ritual take place here, where the Inca asks for the protection of the apus (sacred mountains).
  • The Fortress of Sacsayhuamán: The main event. Amidst cyclopean walls, thousands of actors reenact the symbolic sacrifice and the report of the four suys. It is here that the magnitude of the empire becomes tangible.

Why not experience it at least once?

It’s not just a “show” for tourists; it’s a cultural celebration. Seeing the arrival of the delegations from the four regions, hearing the pututo shells echo off the Incan stones, and feeling the energy of thousands of people connected to the earth will give you goosebumps.
Attending this event allows you to witness one of the purest expressions of cultural identity in Latin America. It's not just about seeing; it's about listening and feeling the pulse of a culture that remains alive through its native language, Quechua.

Travel tip: The weather in June is dry and sunny during the day, but remember that Cusco is over 10,800 feet above sea level. Stay well-hydrated, and don't forget your sunscreen!

Quick Tips for Your Visit:

  • Book in advance. Seats at Sacsayhuamán sell out months in advance. Don't wait until the last minute to purchase your ticket.
  • Arrive early. If you’d rather watch the parades for free in the Plaza de Armas, arrive at sunrise to find a spot.
  • Dress in layers. The Cusco sun is scorching, but as soon as it sets, the mountain chill is unforgiving.
  • Respect and connection: Remember that for Cusco locals, this is a day of national pride. Show respect during the Inca invocations to fully enjoy the mystical atmosphere.

With Hierba Buena Tours, you can enjoy this important ceremony carefree. Just sit back and take in the splendor of the festival as if history had frozen in time.
