The Tambopata river basin is a privileged space, as it houses one of the highest indices of biological diversity on the planet. In this protected natural area, the macaws that offer a multicolored spectacle to the lucky visitors stand out for their colorful presence, especially in the El Chuncho collpa. Among the ecosystems that Tambopata possesses are the aguajales, the swamps, the pacal and the riverside forests, whose physical characteristics allow the local inhabitants to take advantage of the natural resources.The protected natural area houses mainly aquatic habitats that are used as whereabouts of more than 40 species of transcontinental migratory birds. In the national reserve it protects important species considered endangered and offers tourism a privileged destination for observing the diversity of flora and fauna.
In Tambopata the presence of 632 species of birds, 1,200 of butterflies, 103 of amphibians, 180 of fish, 169 of mammals and 103 of reptiles has been reported. Inside there are healthy habitats for the recovery and refuge of endangered populations of species such as the river wolf, the otter and felines such as the yaguarundi, the puma, the jaguar, the ocelot or tigrillo and the margay. As for the birds, in addition to the macaw, the harpy eagle, crested eagle, common paujil, unicorn paujil and carunculated paujil stand out. Tambopata also has different types of vegetation, including the aguajales in the sedimentation plains, the pacales, the terraced forests and the gallery forests. It has identified 17 plant associations by type of forest and a total of 1,255 plant species.
